On the 30th of December, 2004, Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, Vivek Oberoi, Sadhvi Bhagawati, Rishikumars from Parmarth’s Gurukul and Vivek Oberoi’s family traveled down to South India in the wake of the devastating tsunami, planning to adopt the orphans or to build an orphanage. Further, we planned to distribute supplies and spend New Year’s with the tsunami victims, to offer them hope and peace.
However, upon seeing the devastation wrought upon the land, we decided to stay and offer both short term and long term assistance. Our immediate, emergency measures focused on Devanampattinam, a village in Tamil Nadu with about 3000 families which was one of the worst affected by the tsunami.
The devastation was unimaginable; the despair was unfathomable. We had come for 48 hours, but became committed to a multi-faceted, long-term, full relief program in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
